Last year, Temple was challenged to “ Set a Fire” by not being ashamed of the Gospel, as said in Romans 1:16 (For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.). We saw this fire start as revival broke out in our chapels and many saw spiritual growth in their lives. For the 2016-2017 school year, our theme is that “God’s Word is Alive”, and we are challenged to seek it out for ourselves.
Hebrews 4:12 states, For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. As believers, the Bible is our greatest resource and weapon against the assaults of the enemy. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states that it is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. The Word is also one with Jesus, so for those who have them in their heart, it is there that the Word also resides. We are told to hide it in our hearts, so we might not sin against God. The more we read it, the more the Holy Spirit reveals its life to us.
Since the Word is such a powerful tool, it is important that we memorize as much of it as we can. Memorizing scripture is important, for we are told to always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;, even when we may not have a Bible in hand or phone app to pull out.
This is one reason why memory verses are an important part of the Bible classes at Temple, and this year we’re memorizing them together! Grades sixth-twelve have the same verses each week, unlike previous years when it depended on the Bible class you were in. So siblings can work together, or a senior could help a freshman while memorizing it as well. By doing this, we can help each other make His Word alive in our hearts. Remember, His word is just as much alive in your Bible class as it is at youth group or during your own devotions. His Word is alive at Temple! We are excited to see how He uses it in the 2016-2017 school year!
